My History
It all started back in 2002 when I was 5 years old, I had this idea that I would like a motorbike. The funny thing is that I could not ride a push bike at the time so I have no idea where the idea of a motorbike came from. Anyway I asked dad for one and he said if I learnt to ride my bicycle he would see if he could get one. Dad went to work that day thinking he has been pushing that bike around for three years now so I should be safe for another year or so...... Dad came home from work and ther I was riding the bike around the garden like I had been riding for years! Dad can you buy me a motorbike now?
I got the bike, it was a KTM Pro Junior and I rode it round the garden for a few weeks, then dad took me to Washbrook farm Motocross track where I rode on a treack for the first time and I loved every minute of it. Dad then booked me into my first race meeting which I will never forget. We loaded up my uncles Landrover and went to Wilden Lane. The track was very hilly and I got to the first hill in practice and stopped. There was no way I was riding down there I thought! A lady came over and convinced me to ride the rest of the track (eventually), but I did not want to race. My dad said that there was now another practice and this time we would practice a start as well. He fooled me because this was my first race and I thought it was a practice. I don't have a clue where I finished that day but I had got the bug and was now a racer!
I finished sixth in my first year with Stevenage Schoolboy Motocross Club and fourth a year later but I wanted to ride a geared bike so moved up a class in 2004 to a 65cc. I won the Novice South West Championship and finished fourth in my club Championship. In 2005 I raced at National level and was doing really well until I broke a bone in my hand at Little Silver in Devon. I still managed to finish fourteenth in the National Championship after missing the last round due to my hand. I done the Nationals again in 2006 and finished tenth overal but it was in 2007 when I had my first big opportunity. I was offered a ride with Nigel Arnold racing which meant I would have to move up to an 85cc bike a year early but I felt capable of doing this. Nigel Arnold Racing is backed by two time World Superbike Champion Troy Corser and with the help from Nigel (himself a Motocross, Supercross and Road Race Champion in Australia), Troy and the Proffessional riders in the team I managed to finish twelth in the British Masters National Championships. It was a difficult year because I felt pressure riding for such a large team with big sponsors. Nigel taught me how to control this and how to concentrate on my riding. The team were very pleased with my performance as they had only expected me to get a top twenty place. Also in 2007 I had a go at Supermoto to help with my braking. I was not using my front brake enough. Nigel encouraged this and was not surprised by my speed. It did help with my Motocross, but I had now got the Supermoto bug so I entered a race at the British Championships in Teeside. I finished third and that week my dad got a call fro Mike Wright of MW Racing who offered me a Supermoto ride for the 2008 season onboard a Honda CRF150. Me and dad went to Troy's house to discuss my future. It was difficult for me because I loved Motocross and the team had improved my riding so much over the year. Nigel and Troy made my decission easy by encouraging me to go and have a go and use it as a stepping stone to road racing.
So this year I have ridden for Mike at MW Racing and he has prepared my bike to the highest standards. He also managed to convince Pemberton Tyres to support me with my tyres for the season. It was during this season when we were at Oulton Park watching Will Hodgson on a CRF450 road eace bike which Mike had prepared when Mike first asked me if I would like a go at the Aprillia Superteens. I said that I would love to have a go but dad would not be able to afford it because at the time we were trying to do three Supermoto Championships. He said that if dad sorted the entrance fee's he would sort the bike and tyres! So I went on the ACU training day and got my licence but then had to wait a couple of months for my twelth birthday. Mike managed to get me a ride at the Donnington GP and at this stage I not even ridden the bike! I was twelve on Monday 16th June and we went to Mallory park on Wednesday 18th for my first ride and then straight to Donnington for the GP.
What a week and one I will never forget. I mean who in their right mind would turn up and ride at the World GP and race in front of 90,000 spectators when he has only ridden the bike once? Well I did and had a fantastic weekend, I qualified 35th and managed to finish 25th and 22nd but to get the chance of riding in front of all the spectators and superstars in the paddock was amazing.
Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far. I know this is just the beginning but what a way to start my first six years in racing.
